Reflection part 2

My topic was Plageriarism and works cited. There is going to be a big push on my campus to try to get the kids to understand the inportance of plageriarism and how every time you use someone else's work, it must be cited. I have have several teachers already ask me to present to their kids at the beginning of school.

My school is an IB school so the students do lots of writing. We go to Rice University several times a year to use their library, so it is so important that each kid understand how to do a works cited page. They do an internal assessment paper in each class every year and the senior year they write an extended essay that is 4500 words. These essays are turned into a grading board and the kids are graded on the topic, the writing, and the sources. So it is so important that our kids understand the whole process.

Our goal is to have all of our students understand how to write these papers and how to cite all of their sources. they must understand that they cannot use another person's work as their own.

Using technology to present this information is so important. It is a somewhat dry subject so any way it can be jazzed up will help. I put in a little humor to catch their attention with cartoons. We will see if it helps.

Thing 6 Reflection

At first the project seemed overwhelming just like the other summer inservice did the past two years. I didn't get started soon enough as i thought alot about what to do for a movie. I finally realized that I could use soem of the plageriarism info that I had collected and used with some students the past year. I had some very rough slides on powerpoint that need lots of work. So I dug that out and began working, researching, etc. It did start to come together and I was inspired to finish.

I don't know how I will use this with other teachers except to show them what I made and go from there. My teachers had to do 11 tools this summer so most of them did a movie of their own so they will be prepared. My school does do alot with teachnology as my teachers seem to enjoy working with most kinds of technology. I have found that the teachers here are great about sharing knowledge with others.

I would like to think that I will comtinue my blog posts for this school year as a way to keep the student informed about all things happening in the library and maybe feature a new type of technology to share. Teachers and students alike could then come to the library to learn more about something that caught their interest. I also share with other teachers areas of technology that I see other teachers using. We had a teacher here do a facebook project last year that was very successful and several other teachers have tried it or will use the same type of project this year.

I do love an online type of learning situation. You can go as fast or as slow as you need to and you can have access to help if you need it. I have a techie kid at home so he is my "go to" guy if I have problems. That is if I can catch him long enough to get him to sit down with me. Also I have found that there are students om campus that know way more than we do and love getting to help the teachers do things with technology.

Thing 5---Share the New Information.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AjQBaRcNIM

Here it is-----YEA----done.

Thing 4--Create New Information

I made my sldes to use with imovie and I was told to make some slides that had some pictures in it to make it more fun. I found some great cartoons about plagarism that added some humor to the project. I will be anxious to see how it turns out in the actual movie. I did have to go back and add my own works cited slide to the end. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to get this all done as my summer was really busy and I spent most of my time reading blogs and making comments since my school was a pilot school and my teachers had to do 11 tools.

Thing 3--Plan, Organize, and Synthesize your Information

I looked at several of the storyboard things and I liked the digital story board. I really liked the powerpoint screens to do a storyboard and It was the one I chose to use. The kids would like this because they already use powerpoint and know how to do it and it would be an easy transition. I made my slides and I was able to move them around to suit what I was doing. I could then transfer them into I movie. I think the kids should learn how important it is to plan out their movie so that it is much easier to put together.

Tool 2---- Evaluation Forms

The first evulation form I looked at was Simple Checklist. It was very easy to use and I liked it. The second, evulation form, was way too long. I liked the web site evulation worksheet because of the set up. I would probably modify areas of all three to make my own form. I would use this form to hanadout to the students to try to get them to think bout the evulation process. The web site I used was from Indiana University, so it passed all of the critera.

Tool 1 Access Information

I thought I would do my project on plagiarism as it is a big topic at my school and I have taught many classes on this subject. I went to google to see what it had and I found lots of information. I did check other sites to see if they had any thing different and found that they were pretty much the same. I went to Ask, Bling, Crusty, and dogpile. I tried Delicious and really didn't find much, but i will try to attach what I find to a delicious site. I tried the Texas School Librarians. I checked out Flickr and google images which was much more helpful. I did find sites that teachers can use to check plagiarism. I will see what I can put together what what I have found.
